Visual language typographic poster

I drew a quick  portrait sketch in my notebook of my self. I then got magazines  and newspapers and began cutting out different styles of lettering and numbers.  I used the letters to illustrate my face.

In the lab this week we presented our semiotics collage to the class and demonstrated how we put our pictures together using photoshop.

In the lecture we learnt about Typography. Typography is a visual graphic language when used creatively.

we learnt about different styles of writing and how writing evolved such as Roman capitals and Unical script.

At the end of this lecture  we received an assignment, where, we have to produce a typographic poster where we have to sketch a self portrait  and then change this in to a collage using only letter forms from newspapers, magazines, flyers etc.

  1. Bitmap
  2. Bitmap image format
  3. vectors
  4. photoshop

Bitmap graphic is a large grid made up of smaller squares (pixels). If you put colour in each square you can build up an image square by square .  Bitmap is how a telly/monitor works they both use pixels. To do this you set the resolution ie: how many dots tall by how many dots across.  Pixels are short for picture element. , this is a single point in a graphic image. The more dots the better the resolution.

Bitmap format : programmes that use bit map format are Adobe photoshop, corel photopaint, macromedia fireworks, paint shop pro.

Bitmap image formats  are: Tiff, Bmp,  PICT, GIF, Jpeg.

Vectors:  Vector graphics consist of points, lines and curves filled with solid gradient colours when combined can form complex objects.  programmes that use vector formats : EPS , adobe  illustrator, Adobe freehand.

Photo shop : graphics editing programme, widely used for photo re-touching / airbrushing , used to design interface layouts and individual graphics.

Design Principals

1. balance 2. Contrast 3. Movement 4. emphasis

1. Balance :relation of elements in relation to each other and the frame . Theres 2 types of balance symetrical and asymmetrical  symetrical is mirror image. Asymmetrical is not mirrored either side across the centre line.

2. contrast : simply means difference, if we didn’t have contrast the subject would be monotonous bland and uninteresting . contrasting shapes can add tension and with colour our eyes are drawn to colour no matter how small.

3.Movement : movement is the path our eyes folow in a work of art this is achieved by using line repetition and rythym.

4. emphasis : This is the use of particular area of focus rather than numerous details of equal importance and bringing our attention to the most important part of a painting.

I choose Jedward (John and Edward )  as my creative subject, as I thought it would be interesting showing them in different contradictory ways.

(1) I am bad-ass

In the” bad-ass” portrait I chose to portray them as hells angel bikers, using all the symbols of the Hells Angels which included the bikes, tattoos, leather jackets and skull and bones, I also had other bikers in the background to appear as if they were part of a gang.

The  background was a night-time scene with the moon illuminating behind them, making them appear menacing

(2) I am evil

in this portrait John and Edward have the symbol of the devil 666 on fire behind them. They have horns and devil tails.

The background  is black and the 666 is on fire. The horns and tails are in red and the boys are in black suits.

(3) I am masculine

In the “ I am masculine” portrait I depicted John and Edward as body builders, showing all the physique of the perfect masculine man.

John and Edward are in the foreground and other body builders in the background, all striking a pose to show off all of their muscles.

(4) I am wealthy

In the “I am wealthy” portrait I depicted John and Edward as the faces on the American dollar.

The sky is used as the background with the bank notes floating around. I used the dollar symbol and the faces on the dollars to symbolise how wealthy the boys are now after their time on X- factor.

Semiotics: 1. introduction we looked at amagritte painting and our mind is caught in a loop between reason and its opposite we fprget signs and symbols are not things themselves.  2.signs and signifiers a sign is anything used to tell a lie signs have two aspects signifier and signified.    3. advertising words and symbols used in a certain way such as healthy wealthy and wise builds up a relationship between otherwise unrelated images.   4. ideology is a loaded word one common meaning of the word is false consciousness and we can be mislead by falsehoods in the media.  5. activity  action in an advertisement can lead us to believe someone is masculine /femenine /evil/ intelligent / popular / wealthy.

WEEK 6 Field trip

3 pieces of art  seen during the field trip

1. HATE/LOVE 2006.   two black hands one with the word HATE wrote across the knuckles and the second with word LOVE wrote across the knuckles.

Although the piece of art had the words HATE and LOVE it was the word HATE which stood out the most

I disliked this piece of work

2. Snowdrop: this was a simple piece of art  work depicting a white flower, however it also resembled  a lamp.

As the flower also resembled a lamp it reminded me that flowers require light and sunshine to grow .

I liked this piece of art work for its simplicity.

3. This piece of art was untitled. it was two menu boards the first had the words DINNER with the word FEAR underneath.  the second had the word BREAKFAST with the word HOPE underneath.  the words were written on a black background with white writing and the words looked like they were stuck on the board.

the words reminded me that you can be full of hope in the morning and by dinner time it can change to fear.

I liked this piece for its simplicity of words .

I enjoyed this field trip as  I experienced many types of art work. I particularly enjoyed the outdoor art, where the little girl in the foreground was smaller than  the axe in the background, this seemed to be in contradiction of what we would expect to see . it was very cleverly done .

Week 5 digital imaging

Colour: created by value Hue and saturation, by combining these we create colour. to make it easier to unserstand colour we use a colour wheel.

I completed my assignment which was 60 suns and displayed them in the  Lab

Week 3  elements of visual language, Point, line, pattern and texture.

point : our eye is drawn to a point even if t is one dot on a page.       Line:horizontal, vertical and diagonal. Pattern:repeating unit of shape or form.    Texture:  physical texture or VIsual Texture
