Bitmap graphic is a large grid made up of smaller squares (pixels). If you put colour in each square you can build up an image square by square .  Bitmap is how a telly/monitor works they both use pixels. To do this you set the resolution ie: how many dots tall by how many dots across.  Pixels are short for picture element. , this is a single point in a graphic image. The more dots the better the resolution.

Bitmap format : programmes that use bit map format are Adobe photoshop, corel photopaint, macromedia fireworks, paint shop pro.

Bitmap image formats  are: Tiff, Bmp,  PICT, GIF, Jpeg.
